Design Brief: Modern German Handleless Kitchen Design in Hampshire

Overview:

This kitchen renovation in Pennington, Hampshire involved transforming two separate rooms into one cohesive open plan kitchen. The original layout consisted of a small kitchen positioned at the rear of the house and a separate dining room divided by an internal wall.

The client’s vision was to remove this wall and create a long, functional kitchen that maximised the full footprint of both spaces.

While the client initially hoped to incorporate a kitchen island, the proportions of the room would have restricted movement and reduced functionality. Instead, we designed a carefully planned peninsula layout that provided generous preparation space, social seating and improved circulation throughout the kitchen.

The finished design delivers a modern German handleless kitchen that feels calm, practical and visually balanced within the extended space.

Project Details

The objective for this project was to create a modern, open kitchen that connected the two existing rooms into a single functional space.

Key requirements included:

  • Removing the dividing wall to create an open kitchen layout
  • Maximising the full length of the combined rooms
  • Introducing a social preparation area within the kitchen
  • Maintaining good circulation throughout the space
  • Concealing an existing boiler and immersion tank within the cabinetry
  • Achieving a modern German handleless kitchen aesthetic

The client was particularly drawn to a light grey kitchen with clean handleless cabinetry, reflecting a contemporary German kitchen design style.

The orientation of the room presented several design considerations. As the space faces north, natural daylight is limited for much of the day. In addition, the combined room is long and relatively narrow, meaning colour choices and cabinetry planning were critical to ensure the space remained light and open.

To support this, we specified Pronorm X Line handleless cabinetry in a soft light grey finish. This colour palette helps reflect available light and prevents the kitchen from feeling enclosed.

Champagne brass handleless rails were introduced to add warmth and subtle contrast to the cabinetry. This detail softens the modern aesthetic while maintaining the clean lines associated with German kitchen design.

At the far end of the room we incorporated a contrasting metal effect finish. This feature visually separates the kitchen and dining areas, helping define the two zones while maintaining an open plan layout.

Removing the original internal wall required the installation of structural steel beams to support the upper floor. This resulted in variations in ceiling height across the new open space.

Rather than attempting to disguise these structural elements, we incorporated them into the design. A bespoke ceiling feature was created to house the Novy ceiling extractor, forming a clean architectural detail above the peninsula.

This approach allowed the extractor to remain discreet while maintaining uninterrupted sight lines throughout the kitchen.

Another challenge within the space was the presence of an older boiler and immersion tank located within the kitchen area.

Relocating these systems would have added significant cost and disruption to the project, so the design needed to accommodate them within the cabinetry.

The boiler and tank were positioned unusually low compared to standard installations. Traditional cabinetry solutions would have left visible compromises.

Instead, we designed a bespoke height cabinet unit positioned beside the hob. This solution allowed the services to remain fully accessible while concealing them behind the handleless cabinetry.

The result is a seamless finish that preserves the clean aesthetic of the kitchen without sacrificing practicality.

Due to the spatial constraints and existing services, the kitchen could not accommodate deeper worktops or a central island.

The peninsula layout therefore became a key feature within the design.

Benefits of the peninsula layout include:

  • additional preparation space
  • social seating for casual dining
  • improved flow within the kitchen
  • a natural focal point within the room

Despite the narrow footprint, careful planning ensured the peninsula delivered both functionality and visual balance.

The completed kitchen successfully transforms two disconnected rooms into a cohesive and highly functional open plan space.

The light grey Pronorm cabinetry enhances the natural light available within the north facing room, helping the kitchen feel brighter and more spacious.

Champagne brass rail detailing introduces warmth and subtle luxury, while the textured metal accent at the far end of the room adds depth and visual interest.

Structural elements and existing services have been carefully integrated into the design, allowing the kitchen to maintain its clean handleless aesthetic without visible compromises.

The result is a calm, modern kitchen that feels both practical and refined, delivering a space that works effortlessly for everyday living.
